Plastic Bags Begin Again

An enormous island of trash twice the size of Texas is floating in the Pacific Ocean somewhere between San Fransisco and Hawaii.

In some places, the floating debris-estimated to be 90% plastic-goes 90 feet deep. Elsewhere, there are six times more pieces of plastic than plankton, the main food source for many sea animals.

There is more information found here and here . There are videos about it found here and here.

This is one of the most disturbing things I've read recently, and because it has to do with the enormous amount of plastic on our planet , I'm posting links to some crafty videos on ways to recycle/remake plastic bags. I know it may seem small, but for those of us who are owning up to our responsibility to repair planet earth, stopping our dependence on plastic bags is a big deal. We can't just sit around waiting for our government to decalre a ban on plastic bags.

Patterns to try. . .

Two greats from the Spring 09 collection.

Now that I have a dress form, I am brave enough to really get after patterns and sewing in general. The dress form really changes everything and I wish I knew this before. I'm a self taught seamstress and I'm still learning a lot.

This short video could be very inspirational for anyone who sews their own clothes and who may want to go further with their talents. I really appreciate Wendy's background as a "home sewer".

New use for a dress I never wore

This is a Target dress that I bought on clearance awhile back for something like $4. The cut didn't suit my figure so I recently remade it into a lovely shirt.

Huge Amber

So these jumpers are around the stores these days. They remind me of what children wear or what my mom might have worn when I was young. My husband thinks they're silly, but they are so comfortable.

Exhibit of Vintage Aprons

West Plains, Missouri
From what I could tell these aprons ranged from the 1920s to 1950s. The vintage material was so lovely and in very good shape considering the ages. Perhaps they were never actually worn in a kitchen.
